These photos are in a photo album that belonged to Rose Byrnes of South Australia. Rose was born in 1893 in Port Pirie, and she died in Port Pirie in 1966. Her photo album contains many professional photos, but most of them are unidentified. Some photos have been identified by elderly relatives, or by using likenesses from other photos. Where possible, an attempt has been made to identify the dates that the photographer was in business in order to narrow down the search for identification.
Rose was the daughter of Patrick Byrnes and Mary Murray, who married at Jamestown in South Australia in 1883. Patrick Byrnes was from Derreen West in the parish of Ballyvaughan in County Clare, and Mary Murray was from Allendarra near Woodford in County Galway. It’s known that some photos are of members of the Murray family, though no photos from the Byrnes family have been identified as yet – perhaps some of the unidentified photos belong to the Byrnes family.
The photos have been numbered randomly, and information about the photographer recorded next to the photo. Any dates that have been given mean evidence has been found of the photographer in that year, but it does not necessarily mean the photo was taken in that year, since the photographer may well have worked in other years as well.
The photos
Photo Number 1: Photographer Hammer & Co. of 44 Rundle Street in Adelaide – operating in 1887.

Probably a child of Patrick Byrnes and Mary Murray: Could be James Byrnes who was born in 1884 at Jamestown, which is near Clare in South Australia.

Possibly same children as #23?

Did these children die as infants? Could be cousins?
Photo number 19: Photographer Yeoman & Co. of 107 Swan Street, Richmond, Victoria 1886-1888 – probably a travelling photographer. Patrick Byrnes and Mary Murray with one of their babies, possibly Henry Byrnes who was born in June 1888. The background is the same as #21.
Order written on back: Nos. 155-250 District: Pt Pirie Name: Mrs M Byrnes Size ½ sheet Kind: Bust of gent only, Frame: Best Black & Gold. Mount: fary? Alterations: Must be good Bust of Gent only (Presentation Tinted) 88? (hard to read) When wanted: Nov 15 ditto. (does the ditto mean 1888?)
Photo number 20: De Anguinos, 1239 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, New York. De Anquinos has been listed in a New York Directory in 1912.
One of the Murray sisters who went to New York. Kate, Annie, Rose and Ellie all spent some time in New York, though Annie, Rose and Ellie all returned to Ireland in the early 1900s. Perhaps this is Kate who was a Laundress in New York in the 1900 US Census, having moved to the US in 1888.
Photo number 21: Yeoman & Co, 107 Swan Street, Richmond, Victoria. The rough floor indicates a travelling photographer. This is the same background as #19.
Could this be James Byrnes, born in 1884 with an uncle? If the photo was taken at the same time as #19 it was presumably 1888. The photo on the right below is of James Byrnes in about 1894 – are the two photos below of the same boy?

Photo number 23: Alex Gurr; Adelaide. 1895 Moonta, SA (Trav); 1896 Hill St, Kapunda (Trav).
Is it the same woman as #12? And same children as #15? Could it be Annie Murray nee O’Dea with Florrie Murray born December 1892 and next child Mary born July 1897? Eldest child about 6 and youngest about 18 months? These children were born in Pt Pirie though.
Photo number 24: W McCrae, 14 & 15 Berkeley Road, Dublin.
