The Byrnes Family
The Byrnes family were from the townland of Derreen West in the pariah of Ballyvaughan in County Clare. Their farm was near the village of Fanore in the Burren. Patrick Byrnes, the grandfather of my mother, appears to have been the only member of his immediate family to make the move to Australia. He migrated to South Australia some time before his marriage in 1883. His younger brother Martin Byrnes continued to run the family farm in Derreen West.

The Murray Family from Inniskeen and Woodford
Mary Murray, the paternal grandmother of my mother, was born at Allendarra near Woodford in County Galway. Mary migrated to South Australia with some of her siblings around 1880. Her parents had moved to County Galway from County Monaghan, where the Murray family were from the area around Inniskeen.

The Kelly Family from Ruan Dysart, County Clare
The Kelly family were from the parish of Ruan Dysart in County Clare, and were recorded in the townland of Cappanakilla prior to their migration to South Australia. Martin Kelly and his brother John Kelly were the first to migrate in 1851, followed by their brother Jeremiah in 1852 and then a nephew John Kelly in 1857. Martin first settled in Marion near Adelaide, before moving north to Penwortham and then further north to Belalie near Jamestown.
The McMahon family were also from the parish of Ruan Dysart.
My mother’s maternal grandmother was Catherine Brady from County Cavan. Very little is known about Catherine prior to her marriage to Patrick Kelly in 1874 in Sevenhill, South Australia. Catherine’s address at the time of her marriage was Mintaro, and it is possible she was related to Peter Brady of Mintaro. No record of her arrival in South Australia has been found, or of her family in County Cavan or from where she came in that county.
